Sugar Stealth
I know many people who have announced – quite proudly, in very loud voices – they’ve eliminated sugar from their diets.
Whoopee! I applaud them and then ask them what they are drinking. This is a stopper. And, unless they state their preference for water, plain, ordinary water from the tap, I issue a short warning statement about fruit juices and powder additives.
“Follow the money” is a good policy for diet as well as politics. If the source of your juice is from a major food brand, take a look at the label. Chances are, you’ll see an ingredient list that includes the enough ‘toes’ to add a thousands of feet to any argument against buying these products.
My Daily Moment’s message states: “Other key words to look for on a label that indicate sugar: glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, molasses, honey, dextrose, sorghum, maltose and galactose. Some of these are healthy forms of the sweet stuff, but any excess adds up to extra pounds and increased risk of diabetes and other conditions.”
Enough said. Drink water. How much each day is up for debate. The point is, why risk contracting diabetes when it can be avoided (not to say that you might have another factor that would contribute).
Go to the source. The closer you can get to the item that’s providing the juice, the better. Eat an apple. You’ll get the benefit of the fiber along with the exercise of chewing! Speaking of exercise, we have some great classes open to the public on Saturday, June 25. How about a bike spin on the pool deck? A workout with your partner? Check out www.avac.us/sizzlingsummer!
